Heart testing, made simple

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a quick, painless test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It can help check your heart rhythm and is often used to look into symptoms such as palpitations, an irregular pulse, dizziness or breathlessness. At Ready Health you can book a private ECG directly — no referral required — and choose the level of clinical review that suits you.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before booking.

What is a 12-lead ECG?

A 12-lead ECG (electrocardiogram) is a quick, painless test that records your heart's electrical activity from 12 different angles using small sticker electrodes placed on your chest, arms and legs. The recording itself takes only a few minutes.

How long is the appointment?

The 12-Lead ECG and the ECG with Cardiologist Consultant Review are both 30-minute appointments. The Consultant Assessment, ECG and Echocardiogram package is a longer, consultant-led appointment arranged when you book.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No referral is needed. You can book any of our ECG services directly as a private, self-referred patient.

Will a copy of my results be sent to my GP?

Yes. You receive your own ECG report, and on request we will send a copy to your GP so it can be added to your records.

What is the difference between the £99 and £175 ECG services?

The £99 service includes a 12-lead ECG recording interpreted by a Cardiac Technician. The £175 service adds a telephone discussion with a Consultant Cardiologist to talk through your report findings, along with management advice.

Who interprets my ECG?

Your 12-lead ECG is interpreted by a Cardiac Technician. In the Cardiologist Review and the Consultant package, a Consultant Cardiologist reviews your results and discusses them with you.

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a painless ultrasound scan of your heart. It shows the heart's structure and how well it is pumping, including the chambers and valves. It is included in our Consultant Assessment package.

How should I prepare for an ECG?

No special preparation is needed. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid applying heavy moisturiser or oil to your chest on the day, as this can affect how well the electrodes stick.

Is this service suitable for an emergency?

No. Our ECG service is for non-urgent, planned assessment only. If you have sudden chest pain, breathlessness, or think you may be having a heart attack, call 999 immediately or go to your nearest A&E.

How and when do I get my results?

For the standard ECG you receive your report at the clinic. For the Cardiologist Review, your telephone discussion with the Consultant Cardiologist is arranged so you can talk through the findings and next steps.
