What is an echocardiogram?
A quick, comfortable way to see how your heart is working.
An echocardiogram — often called an "echo" or heart scan — is an ultrasound examination of your heart. Using the same safe technology as a pregnancy scan, it produces moving images of the heart's chambers, valves and walls, showing how well the heart muscle is pumping and how blood is flowing through it.
It's a painless, non-invasive test with no radiation and no injections. A small probe is moved gently across your chest while you lie comfortably on your side. The scan helps assess symptoms such as breathlessness, palpitations, chest discomfort, swollen ankles or dizziness, and can monitor known heart conditions, murmurs and valve problems.
At Ready Health we offer three echocardiogram options — from a standalone diagnostic scan with a written report, through to a full consultant-led cardiac assessment. Choose the level of input that suits you below.

Common questions about heart scans at Ready Health.
What is an echocardiogram and what does it show?
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. It shows the size and structure of the heart's chambers, how well the heart muscle is pumping, and how the valves and blood flow are working. It's used to investigate symptoms such as breathlessness, palpitations, murmurs and chest discomfort, and to monitor known heart conditions.
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No. You can book any of our echocardiogram services directly online without a GP referral. If you'd like your own GP to be informed, we can provide a GP letter on request at no extra charge.
How long does the appointment take?
The diagnostic echocardiogram appointment lasts around 45 minutes. The full Consultant Assessment with ECG and echo takes longer, as it includes a face-to-face consultation in addition to the scan and heart trace.
Is an echocardiogram safe or painful?
It's completely safe and painless. An echo uses harmless sound waves (ultrasound), with no radiation and no injections. You may feel light pressure from the probe and the gel may feel cool, but the scan itself is comfortable throughout.
What's the difference between the three services?
Option 1 (£349) is a diagnostic scan with a written report. Option 2 (£449) adds a telephone discussion of your results with a Consultant Cardiologist plus follow-up recommendations. Option 3 (£649) is a complete cardiac work-up — a face-to-face Consultant Cardiologist appointment, an ECG and an echocardiogram bundled together, saving £74 versus booking them separately.
Who performs the scan?
Every scan is carried out by a sonographer accredited by the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE), the national standard for echocardiography in the UK.
When will I get my results?
You'll receive a comprehensive written diagnostic report after your scan. If you've chosen Option 2, a Consultant Cardiologist will call you to discuss the findings; with the full package, your results are reviewed with you during your face-to-face consultation.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
No special preparation is needed. Eat and drink normally and take your usual medication. Wearing a loose two-piece outfit makes it easier, as you'll be asked to undress from the waist up and will be given a gown for privacy.
Can I get a letter for my GP?
Yes. A GP letter is available on request with any of our echocardiogram services, so your usual doctor can be kept informed of your results.
What's included in the full Consultant package?
The £649 package includes a face-to-face Consultant Cardiologist appointment (normally £275), a resting ECG (normally £99) and a full echocardiogram (normally £349). Booked together as a bundle you save £74 against the combined individual price of £723.
