Safe, painless imaging — no radiation, no needles
An ultrasound scan (also known as a sonogram) is a real-time diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves — well above the range of human hearing — to produce live pictures of the inside of your body. A small handheld probe (called a transducer) is moved across the skin with a thin layer of water-based gel, and the reflected sound waves are converted into images on a monitor.
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound uses no ionising radiation, so it is considered one of the safest forms of medical imaging. It is the first-line investigation recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) for a wide range of soft-tissue, abdominal, pelvic, vascular and musculoskeletal concerns. Ultrasound can be safely performed in pregnancy and repeated as often as clinically required. Please note: Ready Health offers ultrasound appointments for adults aged 18 and over only.
At Ready Health, all scans are performed in a private, comfortable consultation room by an experienced sonographer using a modern high-resolution Doppler-capable ultrasound system. Every appointment is allocated 30 minutes — giving the sonographer time to take a thorough clinical history, perform a careful examination, and discuss findings with you on the day. A formal written report follows by email within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about private ultrasound scans at our Standish clinic. Have a question that isn't answered here? Call us on 01257 676 001.
Do I need a GP referral for a private ultrasound scan?
No. You can self-refer for any private ultrasound scan at Ready Health — simply book online and arrive at your appointed time. Our sonographer will take a brief clinical history and perform the scan. You then receive a written report by email within 48 hours, which you are free to share with your GP, NHS consultant or private specialist.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Most ultrasound appointments are available within 3 to 7 days. For urgent same-day or next-day slots — particularly for suspected DVT, testicular pain, severe abdominal pain or early-pregnancy bleeding — call the clinic on 01257 676 001 and we will do everything possible to fit you in.
How much does a private ultrasound cost?
A single ultrasound scan is £140. If you need two scans booked together — for example a combined abdominal and renal scan — the price is £240. Each additional scan after that is +£100. Early-pregnancy reassurance scans (under 16 weeks gestation) are £80. Every appointment is 30 minutes and includes a full written report within 48 hours. The price you see at booking is the price you pay — no GP referral, consultation surcharge or report fee is added.
Are your sonographers properly qualified?
Yes. All ultrasound scans at Ready Health are performed by registered, MSc-qualified and highly experienced sonographers. Each clinician holds a postgraduate Master's qualification in medical ultrasound and works in line with Royal College of Radiologists, Society of Radiographers and British Medical Ultrasound Society professional standards.
What does the written report include?
Reports follow Royal College of Radiologists structured-reporting templates and include: clinical indication, scan technique, findings for each organ or region examined, any incidental findings, and a clear conclusion or impression with recommended next steps where relevant. Reports are emailed in PDF format within 48 hours of your scan.
How should I prepare for the scan?
Preparation depends on the scan type:
Abdominal ultrasound: fast for 6 hours beforehand. Plain water is permitted and encouraged.
Pelvic ultrasound: drink 1 litre of water in the hour before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder.
Renal & bladder ultrasound: arrive with a comfortably full bladder.
Thyroid, testicular, MSK, vascular, soft-tissue and breast scans: no preparation required.
Specific instructions are emailed to you when you book, along with a short pre-scan questionnaire to complete before your appointment.
Is ultrasound safe?
Yes — ultrasound is one of the safest forms of medical imaging available. It uses high-frequency sound waves rather than ionising radiation, so there is no exposure risk. It is safe in pregnancy and can be repeated as often as clinically required. Our equipment and protocols meet British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) safety standards. (Ready Health appointments are for adults aged 18 and over.)
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. You are welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member into the scan room with you as a chaperone — particularly for early-pregnancy or breast scans. If you would prefer, a clinical chaperone from our team can also be provided free of charge — just let us know at booking or on arrival.
What if the scan finds something unexpected?
Our sonographer will discuss any significant findings on the day and make sure you understand what they mean. The written report includes clear next-step recommendations — follow-up imaging, blood tests, or onward referral to a specialist.
Our GP is on-site at the Standish clinic, so where appropriate we can offer a follow-up GP consultation — same day or shortly after — to talk through findings, arrange further investigations, prescribe medication or organise referrals. Additional GP consultation fees apply, but we can almost always get you booked in or seen quickly.
Can I claim ultrasound costs on private health insurance?
Most major UK private health insurers — Bupa, AXA Health, Vitality, Aviva and WPA — reimburse self-pay diagnostic scans when supplied with a written report and itemised invoice. We provide both as standard. Check with your insurer before booking, as some policies require pre-authorisation.
Where is the clinic and is there parking?
Ready Health is at 22 High Street, Standish, Wigan, WN6 0HL. We are 5 minutes from Junction 27 of the M6 motorway. Free on-street parking is available on the High Street, with additional free parking in the public car park directly behind the clinic. Standish railway station is a 7-minute walk away.
