If you are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine, we will tell you at your consultation.
Am I eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine instead?
The NHS usually offers a free flu vaccine to people aged 65 and over, people with certain long-term health conditions, pregnant women, carers, care home residents, frontline health and social care workers and eligible children. Check the NHS website or ask your GP or pharmacist. If you are not eligible, or prefer a private appointment, you can book with us.
When is the best time to have the flu jab?
The flu vaccine is best given in the autumn, before flu starts circulating widely, which is usually from late autumn into winter. It takes around 10 to 14 days for protection to build, so booking early in the season is sensible. You can still be vaccinated later in the winter.
Why do I need a flu jab every year?
Flu viruses change from year to year and protection from the vaccine fades over time. Each season's vaccine is updated to match the strains expected to circulate, so an annual flu jab gives you the best protection.
Can the flu jab give me flu?
No. The injected flu vaccine does not contain live virus, so it cannot give you flu. Some people have mild aches or a slight temperature for a day or two as the immune system responds, which is normal.
What are the common side effects?
Most side effects are mild and settle within a day or two: a sore arm, tiredness, aching muscles or a mild temperature. Serious allergic reactions are very rare, and our clinicians are trained to manage them. We ask you to wait briefly after your vaccination before you leave.
Can I have the flu vaccine if I have an egg allergy?
Most people with an egg allergy can safely have the flu vaccine, as egg-free or very low-egg vaccines are available. Please tell us about any allergies when you book so the clinician can check the right vaccine for you.
Can I have the flu jab and COVID-19 vaccine at the same time?
Yes. UK guidance supports giving the flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same visit, usually one in each arm. Our COVID-19 vaccination is booked separately – please see our COVID-19 vaccination page or call us to arrange both together.
Can I have the flu jab if I feel unwell?
A minor cold is not usually a reason to delay. If you have a fever or feel properly unwell, it is best to rearrange your appointment until you have recovered. Call us on 01257 676 001 and we will find you a new time.
How long does the appointment take?
Allow around 10 to 15 minutes. This covers a short health consultation, your vaccination and a brief rest afterwards before you leave.
Do you vaccinate children?
