What We Test For

Four screenings, two simple sample types

Two of the tests use a small finger-prick blood sample; the other two use a self- or clinician-collected swab. All four are rapid in-clinic tests with same-day results.

Blood Test

HIV

A rapid antibody/antigen test that detects Human Immunodeficiency Virus from a small blood sample. Reliable, well-validated and fully confidential.

Sample typeFinger-prick blood
Best testing window90 days post-exposure
ResultWithin minutes
Blood Test

Syphilis

A rapid treponemal antibody test for the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Early detection allows simple treatment and prevents long-term complications.

Sample typeFinger-prick blood
Best testing window12 weeks post-exposure
ResultWithin minutes
Swab Test

Chlamydia

A swab test for Chlamydia trachomatis, the most common bacterial STI in the UK. Often symptom-free, which is exactly why routine testing matters.

Sample typePenile / cervical swab
Best testing window14 days post-exposure
Pre-testNo urine 1 hour prior
Swab Test

Gonorrhoea

A swab test for Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Frequently co-occurs with Chlamydia, which is why we always screen for both together.

Sample typePenile / cervical swab
Best testing window14 days post-exposure
Pre-testNo urine 1 hour prior
When Should I Test?

Timing your test for the most accurate result

Each infection has a "window period" — the time between possible exposure and when a test can reliably detect it. Testing too early can produce a false negative. The optimal windows below give the most accurate results; we will always advise on retesting if your timing falls inside a window.

Important — preparing for your swab tests

Please do not pass urine for at least one hour before your appointment. Both the Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea swabs are significantly more accurate when the sample area has not been recently flushed. If you have just been to the toilet, simply move your appointment to later the same day.

If you are unsure how recent your possible exposure was, please book the appointment anyway — we can guide you on whether to test now or schedule a follow-up at the optimal window. Testing earlier than recommended is still useful for peace of mind, but a clear result before the window closes does not entirely rule out infection.

Your Appointment

What happens when you visit us

A typical appointment lasts 20–30 minutes from arrival to walking out with your results. Everything is done under one roof in a single visit.

1

Confidential consultation

A short private chat with your clinician about any symptoms, possible exposures, recent tests and what you would like screened.

2

Sample collection

A small finger-prick blood sample for HIV and Syphilis, plus your Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea swabs. Most people finish this stage in under 10 minutes.

3

Rapid in-clinic results

Results are processed on-site while you wait. Your clinician explains each result clearly and answers any questions.

4

Certificate & treatment

You leave with a signed written certificate of your results. If anything is positive, a prescription for treatment is written there and then.

Discreet, confidential and judgement-free

Your appointment is entirely private. Nothing is shared with your NHS GP, your insurer or any third party unless you specifically ask us to provide a referral letter. Our clinic has separate consultation rooms, a calm reception area and clinicians who do this every day — there is nothing you can ask or tell us that we will not have heard before.

Frequently Asked

Sexual health screening — your questions answered

How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take 20–30 minutes from arrival to leaving with your results and certificate. The rapid HIV and Syphilis blood tests give results within minutes; the Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea swab results are also processed in clinic on the same day.
Is everything completely confidential?
Yes. Sexual health appointments at Ready Health are entirely private. Nothing is added to your NHS GP record and nothing is shared with insurers or any third party unless you specifically request a referral letter or onward care. Records are kept securely in line with GDPR and our duty of medical confidentiality.
I had a possible exposure recently — should I still come now?
Yes — please do still come in. We can advise on whether your test results will be reliable yet, or whether a retest at the optimal window is needed. For most people we recommend at least 14 days for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea, 12 weeks for Syphilis, and 90 days for HIV from the potential exposure.
Why must I not pass urine before the swab tests?
Recent urination flushes the urethra and reduces the bacterial load that the Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea swabs are designed to detect. Holding off for at least one hour gives a more concentrated sample and a much more accurate result. If you have just been to the toilet on arrival, we will simply rebook you to a slightly later slot.
What happens if a test is positive?
If a result is positive, your clinician will explain it clearly and discuss next steps with you in private. Where appropriate, a prescription for treatment is issued in the same appointment, and we will provide guidance on partner notification and any follow-up testing required. A positive HIV or Syphilis result on a rapid test is always confirmed by a follow-up laboratory test.
Do I get something in writing?
Yes — every screening includes a signed written certificate of your results, included in the £120 fee and provided on the day.
Do you test for other infections too?
This panel covers the four most clinically important screenings as standard. If you have specific concerns — for example Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HPV or Herpes — please mention this when booking and your clinician can advise on additional testing options.
Do I need to be experiencing symptoms?
No. Many sexually transmitted infections — particularly Chlamydia and HIV — can be entirely symptom-free for long periods. Routine screening is the only reliable way to know your status, regardless of whether you feel unwell.
Where are you and how do I find you?
We are at 22 High Street, Standish, Wigan, WN6 0HL — on the main shopping street, with parking nearby. Call us on 01257 676 001 if you would like directions or any extra information before booking.
