HGV Medical

Medical exams are mandatory for every new HGV driver before they can drive commercially. This means if you’re planning on driving for your job, you’ll need a licensed practitioner to carry out a medical and determine whether you’re fit for operating large vehicles.

The DVLA require you to have a second medical exam when you are 45 years old for you to continue driving, and then every 5 years until the age of 65. If you’re still working as a HGV driver after this, you’ll need a medical check every year to keep within national regulations.

This includes everything in your physical exam plus the completed D4 form submitted on your behalf.

HGV Medical FAQ's

Generally, HGV medicals check that you’re in a fit state to operate large and heavy vehicles for long hours, and look for anything that might stop you from being able to safely do your job. This can include things like:- Eyesight tests- Blood pressure checks- Drug tests- Mental health- Neurological conditions- Sleep disorders. If you have any history of the above, please tell your practitioner during the appointment.

Your clinician will go through the D4 form with you and ask you a series of questions relating to your health and medical history, as well as carrying out some physical checks. This is all confidential and will only be shared with the DVLA as proof of completion of your HGV medical.
