Contact UsThe JE jab provides effective protection against the inflammatory brain infection that’s spread through mosquito bites.
We’d always advise having the injection if you’re able to, as severe cases of Japanese Encephalitis can be fatal
JE injection
Most vaccines for Japanese Encephalitis are around 95% effective at protecting people from disease.
They won’t cause you to develop an infection, and have saved lives from being lost due to inflammation of the brain. However, there are other things you can do as well as the vaccine to keep yourself safe from mosquitos on your travels.
Make sure you wear clothes that cover most of your skin, and sleep under a net at night to stop any insects entering your bed. You should also wear DEET or Picaridin-based bug repellent to keep any potential biters away.
Japanese Encephalitis jab side effects
All injections have the potential to cause side effects, but these are usually short-lived and mild in comparison to the disease you’re being protected against.
Some of the most common complaints after a JE vaccine include:
- Pain and soreness at the injection site
- Stomach problems like tenderness, nausea or diarrhoea,
- Cold or flu-like symptoms
- Headaches
- Muscle aches
Not everyone will experience side effects, but if you do, painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen should help to ease the discomfort until it naturally wears off.
JE vaccine schedule
Your first vaccines should be completed at least a week before you’re due to depart.
These should be split over two doses, ideally 28 apart. However, if your trip is coming up quicker than that, we should be able to arrange a more rapid course for you where our clinicians administer the jabs 7 days apart.
If you’re only travelling to an at-risk area once, you won’t need a booster. However, if you’re travelling again 12 months after your first injection, you should book in with us for a booster to stay protected.
