Allergy tests are usually done when someone’s experiencing uncomfortable symptoms but can’t pinpoint what’s causing them. Whether you break out in an itchy rash, find yourself fighting a runny nose, or get stomach cramps after dinner sometimes – it’s always good to know for sure what’s causing it.
Allergy Symptoms
You might be familiar with the most severe type of allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis. This is where someone’s throat gets tight and they struggle to breathe properly. However, allergies can also show themselves in more, much less severe ways.
Some of the most common signs of a reaction to allergens include:
- Runny nose
- Stuffy nose
- Sneezing
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Dry, persistent cough
- Skin rash
- Tiredness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
Private allergy testing UK
Paying for a private allergy test means you get to find out what’s causing your symptoms sooner. The NHS does offer allergy testing for people who find that their reaction limits their daily activities, though waiting lists can often be long due to service demand.
At Ready Health we offer an affordable option for private allergy testing at our state-of-the-art clinic in Standish for anyone wanting to test against a wide range of allergens.

At Ready Health, we test for allergies using the skin prick method. During the test a little of the allergen is introduced to your skin through a small prick to see it causes a contact reaction (allergic dermatitis). It’s usually done on the inside of your forearm and you’ll get your results in the same session.Reactions can take between 10-20 minutes to appear, and any redness or itching indicates a positive result for that allergen.
Skin prick tests for allergens can cause some itching, redness and discomfort, but most reactions tend to fade within a few hours, and can be managed with certain creams or antihistamines. Most people don’t find it a particularly painful procedure, but everyone’s tolerance is different. You should still be able to drive once your appointment is over.
Our experienced clinicians advise you to stop using antihistamines for 3 days before your skin prick appointment. This is so you can get the best result possible without medications masking any potential reaction.
Absolutely! Even if you’ve had an allergy test as a child, it could still be worth checking to see if you’ve developed any new intolerances. Some people discover they have allergies for the first time as an adult for a variety of reasons. Some decide to venture out with their food tastes and find they can’t order the delicious prawn paella anymore, or perhaps a new pet is raising suspicions about a runny nose. You could even be dealing with the effects of a mould allergy, especially if you’ve seen it growing inside your home. Whatever the worry, find out for sure with an allergy test at Ready Health.
