Contact UsMalaria is a serious parasitic infection that’s spread through the bites of diseased mosquitoes. If you’re travelling to an area where Malaria is known to exist, you should make it a priority to get preventative treatment to make sure you stay safe during your trip.
It’s caused by a parasite and can cause extreme fevers, nausea, problems with your stomach and bowels, as well as widespread pain and changes to your heart and breathing rates.
Thankfully, it can be prevented with tablets called antimalarials.
Malaria Prophylaxis Tablets
One of our clinicians will be able to provide you with malaria prophylaxis tablets for however long you’re planning on being in an at-risk area. They work by stopping any parasites taking hold once they’re in your blood – if you’ve been bitten. They basically kill any parasite that’s entered your bloodstream before it has chance to cause an infection and make you ill.
Please share your travel details with your practitioner so they can give you the best advice possible and keep you as healthy as possible.
It’s always a good idea to travel with documentation of any prescriptions you carry too.
Side Effects Of Malaria Tablets
Any antimalarials you take might cause side effects, but in comparison to the disease it’s preventing, these are mild, short lived, and won’t put your life in danger.
Some of the most common side effects of anti malaria tablets include:
- Nausea
- Stomach upsets
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Sensitivity to sunlight
It’s important to be aware of these before you travel in case you can’t access medical help while you’re away. If you’re worried about any of the possible side effects and how to manage them, please chat to your clinician who’ll be more than happy to give you advice.
Where is Malaria most common?
Malaria is a tropical disease that’s most often found in regions like:
- Africa
- Asia
- Some parts of Central and South America
- Islands of the Pacific Ocean
According to Travel Health Pro.org, most cases of Malaria in 2022 came from the WHO African region, with countries like Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Mozambique all having a significant impact on the statistics.
However, even if you’re travelling to other areas listed as being at risk of Malaria, you should make an appointment to talk to one of our clinicians about prevention and get the right treatment to keep you safe.
Private Travel Clinic for Malaria Tablets
Ready Health offers a private travel clinic service for people who need vaccinations or treatments to visit other countries.
Anti malaria medications are not available on the NHS, so patients travelling abroad should book privately for their prophylaxis and travel health advice.
Please book below to see a list of available appointments and prices.
There’s currently no vaccine available for travellers to prevent Malaria. However, as long as you take your prevention tablets properly, you should be protected if you get bitten by an infected mosquito. As well as taking medication, there are other things you can do like using insect repellent and sleeping under mesh netting so insects can’t land on you in the night when they’re most active.
There are a few different medicines that can help prevent malaria, and you’ll be offered a certain one depending on your travel plans. There are two types that should work in all risk areas, but depending on your medical history, you might be offered an alternative if your clinician thinks it’s more suitable for you. It’s important to share your full travel itinerary and your medical background with your practitioner so they can make the safest decision for you.
