Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Symptoms, Treatments, and How Your GP Can Help

PCOS is one of the most common hormone conditions affecting women—but many people still don’t get diagnosed early. At Ready Health Private Medical Clinic in Standish, we help women manage PCOS symptoms and feel more in control of their health.

What Is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition where your ovaries produce higher levels of male hormones (androgens), and may develop small cysts. It can affect your periods, skin, weight, and fertility.

Common Symptoms of PCOS

Symptoms can vary, but often include:

  • Irregular or missed periods
  • Excess facial or body hair (hirsutism)
  • Acne or oily skin
  • Weight gain, especially around the belly
  • Thinning hair on the scalp
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

Some women only find out they have PCOS when they struggle to conceive.

What Causes PCOS?

We don’t know exactly—but insulin resistance, hormone imbalance, and genetics often play a role.

How Is PCOS Diagnosed?

We look at your symptoms, carry out blood tests, and may arrange an ultrasound scan. You don’t need to have cysts to be diagnosed.

PCOS Treatment Options

There’s no cure, but there are lots of ways to manage symptoms and improve your quality of life:

  • Lifestyle changes – healthy eating and movement can regulate hormones and support weight management
  • Hormonal treatments – such as the contraceptive pill to regulate periods and reduce excess hair or acne
  • Fertility support – for those trying to conceive
  • Insulin-sensitising medication – if insulin resistance is a factor

When to See a GP

If your periods are irregular, or you’re experiencing other PCOS symptoms, don’t ignore it. At Ready Health, we’ll take the time to listen, test, and create a plan that suits your needs.
