Understanding Insulin Resistance: Symptoms, Risks, and How to Reverse It
If you’ve been feeling tired, struggling with weight gain, or noticing sugar cravings that won’t quit, insulin resistance could be playing a part. At Ready Health Private Medical Clinic in Standish, we regularly see patients dealing with this common—but often misunderstood—condition.
What Is Insulin Resistance?
Insulin is a hormone that helps your body use sugar (glucose) for energy. When your cells stop responding properly to insulin, your blood sugar stays high—and your body makes more insulin to try and keep up. That’s insulin resistance.
Symptoms of Insulin Resistance
You might not notice any symptoms at first. But over time, signs can include:
- Constant fatigue
- Sugar cravings
- Weight gain, especially around the tummy
- Brain fog or poor concentration
- Skin tags or dark patches on the neck
Left unmanaged, insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health issues.
What Causes Insulin Resistance?
Several factors can raise your risk:
- Being overweight or inactive
- A diet high in processed carbs and sugar
- Genetics or family history
- Hormonal conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)
How Can You Reverse Insulin Resistance?
The good news? You can improve insulin sensitivity with a few key changes:
- Move your body daily—even a brisk walk helps
- Eat more fibre and protein, and cut down on refined carbs
- Lose even a small amount of weight (5–10% can make a big difference)
- Get good sleep and manage stress
At Ready Health, we can also check your blood sugar and insulin levels to help monitor your progress.
