X-ray Services at Ready Health Standish

What is an X-ray?
An X-ray is a quick and non-invasive imaging technique used to view the inside of the body. It’s especially effective for examining bones and other dense body structures. Using a burst of high-energy radiation, the X-ray machine captures images that reveal information about your health. You won’t feel or see the X-ray itself, and it’s a simple, efficient way to get a closer look at the body’s internal structures.
How Do I Know if I Need an X-ray?
Your healthcare provider will determine if an X-ray is necessary for your situation. They will refer you for one if they believe it’s the best way to assess your health concern. X-rays are commonly used to examine various body parts, including the mouth, jaw, and bones.
How Can I Book an X-ray?
To schedule an X-ray, you’ll need a referral from a healthcare professional. If you have an outpatient consultation with a consultant at Ready Health Standish, they will arrange the scan for you if it’s needed. Alternatively, you can use a referral from your GP or another healthcare provider. Simply email the referral to our team, and we’ll get in touch with you to schedule the appointment.
How Should I Prepare for an X-ray?
In most cases, no special preparation is required for an X-ray. However, if specific preparation is needed, you’ll be informed at the time of booking. For abdominal X-rays, please let us know if you could be pregnant. Additionally, we recommend wearing minimal jewellery or accessories to your appointment, as you may be asked to change into a hospital gown to ensure the best possible imaging quality.
What Happens During an X-ray?
During your X-ray, you may be asked to stand, sit, or lie in a specific position to help the radiographer capture the necessary images. You might also be asked to hold your breath briefly or adjust your posture for a short time. The duration of these positions is kept to a minimum. Depending on the area being scanned, multiple images may be taken from different angles.
How Long Does an X-ray Take?
X-ray images are usually taken within a few seconds, but the entire process may take around 20 minutes, depending on how many images are needed and the specific type of scan.
Are X-rays Safe?
X-rays are generally safe with minimal risk. They are performed under strict regulations, ensuring that the benefits of the examination outweigh the risks. The radiation dose used in diagnostic X-rays is very low and often comparable to natural background radiation. Your healthcare provider will only recommend an X-ray if it’s deemed necessary, and the risk of not conducting the examination may be greater than the risk of the procedure itself.
When and How Will I Receive My Results?
Once your X-ray is completed, the images will be reviewed by a Radiologist. You’ll typically receive your results within a week, which will be sent to the healthcare provider who referred you. For certain specialist exams, the timing may vary, so it’s best to confirm with the hospital team. Your referring doctor may also recommend a follow-up appointment to discuss your results in more detail.
