Understanding Abnormal Smear Test Results: What You Need to Know

At Ready Health Standish, we understand that receiving an abnormal smear test result can be worrying. It’s important to remember that in most cases, an abnormal result doesn’t mean cancer is present. We’re here to explain what abnormal smear test results mean, why they occur, and the steps you can take if you receive an abnormal result.

What is a Smear Test?

A smear test, also known as cervical screening, is a routine test designed to detect pre-cancerous changes in the cells of the cervix, the entrance to your womb. Regular cervical screening is crucial for monitoring changes in the cervix, and it plays a key role in preventing cervical cancer.

Abnormal smear results occur when changes are detected in the cells of your cervix. These changes, known as dyskaryosis, can range from mild to severe, and they are often linked to the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

What Causes Abnormal Smear Results?

It’s important to know that 1 in 20 smear tests show mild changes in cervical cells. These mild changes (known as mild dyskaryosis) are typically monitored with more frequent screening. In many cases, these changes resolve on their own without the need for further treatment. However, if your smear results show moderate or severe cell changes (moderate or severe dyskaryosis), further investigation may be needed to ensure everything is okay.

HPV is a virus that can cause abnormal cell changes in the cervix, but in most cases, the virus clears up on its own without causing any harm. Even if HPV is detected, it doesn't necessarily mean that cancer is present. In fact, only a small number of people with HPV will go on to develop cervical cancer.

What Happens After an Abnormal Smear Test?

If your smear test shows mild changes, your GP may recommend more frequent screenings to monitor these changes and ensure that they are not progressing. If your results show moderate or severe changes, your GP will likely refer you for a more detailed examination to assess the extent of the changes.

In many cases, your consultant may suggest a procedure called colposcopy. This is a closer examination of the cervix using a special magnifying instrument, which helps the doctor to see any changes in the cells more clearly. A colposcopy can help your consultant determine whether further action is needed, such as a biopsy or treatment to remove abnormal cells.

Should You Be Concerned?

It’s completely natural to feel anxious after receiving an abnormal smear test result, but remember that abnormal results rarely indicate cancer. Most abnormal results are due to mild or moderate cell changes that do not progress to cancer. Our experts at Ready Health Standish are here to address your concerns and provide clear guidance on the next steps. If needed, they will discuss any follow-up procedures to ensure your health and peace of mind.
