When Period Pain Isn’t ‘Normal’ – Signs of Endometriosis or PCOS

Some period pain is expected—but if it’s stopping you from living your life, it might not be “just part of being a woman.”

At Ready Health Clinic, we support women across Wigan, Chorley, Bolton, and Horwich who are dealing with heavy, painful, or irregular periods. Sometimes the cause is endometriosis or PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)—and both are more common than you might think.

So… What’s Normal and What’s Not?

Signs your period might not be ‘normal’:

  • Severe pain that doesn’t respond to painkillers

  • Pain that stops you from working, studying, or socialising

  • Irregular periods or long cycles

  • Heavy bleeding or bleeding between periods

  • Fatigue, bloating, or digestive issues around your period

  • Difficulty getting pregnant

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having things checked.

What Is Endometriosis?

A condition where tissue similar to the womb lining grows elsewhere—like the ovaries, bowel, or bladder. It can cause:

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • Painful periods

  • Pain during sex or going to the toilet

  • Fertility problems

What Is PCOS?

A hormonal condition that affects how the ovaries work. It can cause:

  • Irregular periods or no periods

  • Acne or oily skin

  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • Hair thinning on the scalp

  • Excess facial/body hair

  • Fertility issues
